Pokaraan Arts is based in Pokaraan, a small village in the Thar Desert, the largest desert in India.

It was established as a social initiative focusing on the traditional weavers from the Meghwal community. The Meghwal community is believed to be descendents of Rishi Megh, a saint who had the power to bring rain from the clouds (called Megh in Hindi) through his prayer. In the parched desert where the village lies, it is easy to understand why a sage who brought rain would be highly revered. The Meghwal men have been traditional weavers while the women help with pre-weaving preparatory activities and surface embellishments such as embroidery.

Purkal Stree Shakti Samiti (PSSS) is based in a village known as Purkal, located in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Purkal Stree Shakti Samiti (PSSS) translates as ‘an organisation for empowering the women of Purkal’. The goal of PSSS is to develop entrepreneurial skills in women, so that they can manage a business and maximize their income. The program provides skill training and a work space to produce hand-made products which they can sell. The workspace is comfortable, airy and hygienic; there is a crèche providing not merely custodial care but also preschool education to the children belonging to these women.
